Who you surround yourself with matters. I’m not suggesting that there is an “ideal crew” that you must constantly surround yourself with but we can all improve by hanging out with people who take care of themselves and who take care of others. The people you train with can have a huge impact on your mentality and therefore your workouts. Your training partners can help you push harder than you ever imagined. They can help you flourish and stay consistent. They can both challenge you and support you. These people can help you reach your goals…if they are a good fit for you.
Obviously, there’s no perfect training partner or group but you may find that there is room for improvement. If the people around you at your gym are dragging you down or always gossiping, then you can make changes. Be cautious of those who are complaining a lot and regularly looking for excuses as to why they aren’t able to work hard.
If you want to reach your fitness or performance goals, it’s best to hire a coach or train with some seasoned athletes. These individuals can help you with your technique, strategy, movement, mentality and more. Great training partners will elevate your fitness because they will help you push the intensity, hold you accountable and they’ll also offer support for your doubts and stresses. It doesn’t matter if your goal is to run a 5k or compete at the CrossFit Games — finding quality people to train with is often the difference between you reaching your goals or not.
Look over these questions and think about how you might improve as a training partner. Consider who you might want to train with more or less often.
Finding the Best Training Partners
Are they timely and accountable? Can you rely on them to be on time and where they say they’ll be?
Do they push themselves and regularly work to build their mental toughness?
Are they encouraging? Can you count on them to help you and lift you up?
Are they motivated and excited about training? Do they look forward to workouts and are they pumped about their goals?
Are they positive and do they give out good vibes? Do they smile, laugh, joke, play and stay optimistic (for the most part)? Are they enjoyable to be around?
Are they committed? Do they make choices to stay late, come early and train their weaknesses regularly?
Are they easy for you to talk to? Is it safe to share your doubts and concerns with them? Do they listen and ask you questions to find out more?
Do they respond to challenge with perseverance and patience? Are they willing to work through struggle and setbacks?
Are they open to learning and staying coachable? Do you see them reading, practicing, receiving coaching and studying?
Do they stay balanced and prioritize other areas of their life (relationships, downtime, work, giving back)?
Do they openly share their struggles? Are they honest with what’s hard for them and do they lean on you for support?
If you don’t know where to start, try asking around or post something on social media. See if there is anyone else in your area looking to train at a certain time for a particular purpose. Ask your coaches if they know anyone, drop in some other gyms or do some workouts with an already established group.
We often want to do things on our own. It’s sometimes not the quickest or most effective way to make changes and reach our biggest goals. The people around us can really help us, teach us and inspire us. If you want to become better at something, then you can expedite the process by surrounding yourself with others who are positive, dedicated and encouraging. You can pick up on their good habits and ask them for help when you begin to struggle. When you find a solid training partner or training partners, you’ll not only feel better but you’ll be performing better too.
